National Redwing Championships 2017

August 2017 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the last occasion that the National Redwing Championships were held in the Taw and Torridge Estuary. Given this early notification and that the venue is probably the most central and accessible for many years, it is hoped that a field in the region of 30 boats maybe anticipated and, with this target, those of you with overdue projects may be spurred into restoration mode. The traditionalists should note that an increasing number of boats are now being raced in original classic guise with timber spars and metal plate and, with their own trophy, they afford some great competitive sailing. The enthusiasm, support and camaraderie of the Redwing community, once experienced, is never forgotten!

Racing daily from sands at the South end of Instow beach from the 27th, they will make an amazing spectacle and prove a considerable public draw. In recent years the Championships have taken on something of an international air with boats from the Westcountry, Wales and the Isles of Scilly but also a small Breton representation. To engage the Public interest, entry lists and daily results will be posted at salient points in Instow and Appledore.

Competitors will arrive on the 26th using the lower car-park of the Commodore Hotel, opposite the race venue, for unloading and loading road trailers throughout the 26th August, the afternoon/evening of the 1st September and the morning of the 2nd; sailors arriving prior to this date may unload at the Club and move to the beach on the 26th All trailers will be removed to the Yacht Club for storage during the event, and where competitors’ vehicles may also be accommodated. Registration will take place at the Yacht Club on the evening of the 26th; Entry Form, Notice of Race and Entry List appear below and a full Event Programme will follow.
